Engine Head - Verification and Analysis of the Gasket

Often, during the design phase, it is necessary to calculate the distribution and magnitude of the contact pressure between two facing surfaces. It may happen that these surfaces are not easily accessible, making it difficult, if not impossible, to measure or assess the contact pressures that are being applied.
Thanks to Prescale film, a thin film that can be easily placed between contact surfaces, it is possible to verify the correct design and manufacturing of the sealing gaskets located between the cylinder head and the engine block in internal combustion engines.

The correct sizing and functioning of these gaskets ensure the complete separation between the engine’s cooling, lubrication, and fuel fluids, preventing any leaks or seepage.

Prescale for engine head
Undoubtedly, verifying the correct pattern and maintaining adequate surface pressure on the engine gaskets are crucial for optimizing any internal combustion engine. Furthermore, with the Prescale film, it is possible not only to visualize the exact distribution of pressures (and any potential gaps, scratches, or imperfections through which leaks might occur), but also to assess the magnitude of the pressures involved in a repeatable and fairly accurate manner.

In response to these needs, Fuji Film offers a specialized film that "imprints" based on the pressure applied to it, providing a clear trace that allows for precise identification of the exact contact areas and the magnitude of pressure exerted on each small portion of the contact surface.

The Prescale film essentially consists of a film coated with a very uniform and homogeneous layer of microcapsules containing a coloring substance (PSC - Particle Size Control technology), and an additional film coated with a material necessary for the development and stabilization of this colorant. When pressure is applied to the Prescale film, it causes some of these microcapsules to break. Depending on their number and the compression applied, the microcapsules can color the other section of the film (with various shades of red, the density of which is evidently proportional to the pressure applied), allowing for the development and proper fixation of the colorant.

The film also allows for the verification of the correct tightening of the bolts that connect the cylinder head to the engine block, in order to identify any gaps or areas that do not ensure adequate sealing and separation between the different chambers.

In the automotive sector, the Prescale film has also proven useful for the following situations:
- study and verification of brake pads;
- verification of windshield wiper pressure on the windshield;
- analysis of tire footprint;
- study of bodywork molds;
- verification of proper contact for door seals;
- etc.

The film can be cut to size with simple scissors and placed in the area of interest for both static and dynamic measurements. By performing a visual inspection using the colorimetric charts provided with the film (or through suitable electronic analysis tools available separately), it is possible to identify the different color gradations developed on the Prescale film. This allows the operator to generate a documented test report and offers the possibility to create a historical record of tests conducted over time.

The Prescale film is available in eight different gradations (5LW, 4LW, LLLW, LLW, LW, MW/MS, HS, HHS), which cover measurement ranges from 0.006/0.05 MPa to 130/300 MPa. For all versions, an accuracy of measurement no worse than ±10%FS is guaranteed (which can be significantly improved when the film is used in conjunction with appropriate analysis instrumentation).
